In many cases, these speakers relate their stories about alcohol use, which may include accounts of a near-death experience or the loss of a loved one due to alcohol. Speakers are often brought in to support orientation activities or alcohol awareness week. There is no research literature on the efficacy of invited speakers for engaging students on the issue of alcohol. At that time, the most common approaches were informational in nature.

They were primarily based on the assumption that students misused alcohol or other substances due to a lack of knowledge or awareness of health risks and that an increase in knowledge regarding the negative effects of these substances would lead to a decrease in use. These findings suggest that continuing to pursue approaches based solely on informative or awareness models is a poor use of resources on college campuses.

For the last 11 years, with the initiation of the Parasitic Plant Genome Project and other collaborations, his focus has largely been to generate and leverage comparative genomic data in the search for and experimental testing of 'genes that matter' in parasitic plant - host plant interactions.

Ken Shirasu inand started her own laboratory in Her research focus is molecular mechanisms of haustorium formation and parasitic plant-host interaction in Orobanchaceae, especially in Striga spp and Phtheirospermum japonicum. Her current book project focuses on food, labor, and migration in Honduras and post-Katrina New Orleans. UMBC is technically in Baltimore, and yet it can feel very far away. How can students and researchers connect to Baltimore for our research and teaching? What are the ethics of doing such work?

At a medium-scale, models of human decision-makers are being used to study social technical systems such as the pharmaceutical drug supply network. At the highly detailed individual scale, virtual replicas of humans are being crafted. These virtual humans are facsimiles of people that can engage people in face-to-face interactions using the same verbal and nonverbal behavior people use.

The designs of these various models heavily leverage psychological theories and data. Psychology and the social sciences, in turn, are increasingly using these computational artifacts as means to formulate, test and explore theories about human behavior.

Then I will provide my perspective on the synergy between psychology and the engineering of these artifacts as well as illustrate this perspective using our work on the computational modeling of emotion. It consistently ranks among the 20 hottest cities for tech, and top three cities for women in technology. Participants will get a broad overview of the entrepreneurial and social enterprise landscape and learn ways to get involved.

The goal: to provoke a conversation about how stronger collaborations between human-centered computing, data science, and critical media studies could create a better world. His research brings together data science, ethnographic, and archival methods to analyze the gendered pretenses and implications of information politics in the post-World War II British and American empires. Advances in artificial intelligence enable us to address key social issues. However, to see the benefit of this technology in many real-world applications, an integrative approach is necessary; effective solutions consist of a pipeline of processes or tasks involving both humans and machines.

My research has integrated human computer interaction HCI techniques and data-driven methods applied to human data to steer technological innovations for people with visual impairments and for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

In this talk, I will provide an overview of my research program, and I will demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating machine learning and HCI methodologies with two concrete examples: i personal object recognizers trained by blind users, and ii facial expression synthesis in sign language animations.Toggle navigation. This is the story of my assorted attempts to do some good with machine learning. Lester moved to Microsoft from Stanford University, where he was an assistant professor of Statistics and by courtesy of Computer Science.

As need increases, access decreases. It is a paradox that as human motor impairments become more severe, and increasing assistance needs are paired with decreasing motor abilities, the very machines created to provide this assistance become less and less accessible to operate with independence. My lab addresses this paradox by incorporating robotics autonomy and intelligence into physically-assistive machines: leveraging robotics autonomy, to advance human autonomy.

Achieving the correct allocation of control between the human and the autonomy is essential, and critical for adoption. The allocation must be responsive to individual abilities and preferences, that moreover can be changing over time, and robust to human-machine information flow that is filtered and masked by motor impairment and control interface. As we see time and again in our work and within the field: customization and adaptation are key, and so the opportunities for machine learning are clear.

However, the manner of its implementation is not. In this talk, I will discuss the needs of and need for machine learning within the domain of assistive machines that bridge gaps in human function, and overview ongoing efforts within my lab that aim to tackle adaptation and learning.
